Voice Dictation

01 What exactly does Dragon Medical One do?

Dragon Medical One converts your voice into text in real time. You speak, it types - with up to 99% accuracy and no voice training required. It works directly inside your EHR, so instead of typing your notes, you dictate them hands-free.

Think of it as removing the keyboard from your workflow. You are still composing and organizing the note yourself, but without touching a key.

02 How accurate is it? Do I have to train it to recognize my voice?

Dragon Medical One reaches up to 99% accuracy out of the box - no voice profile training required. It uses a medical-specific speech model trained on hundreds of millions of clinical utterances, so it already understands clinical terminology, drug names, and specialty language from day one.

It does continue to learn your voice and preferences over time, so accuracy only improves with use.

03 What EHRs does it work with?

Dragon Medical One works with virtually every EHR in use today - Epic, eClinicalWorks, Athena, Cerner, NextGen, Meditech, Allscripts, and hundreds of others. It operates as a floating dictation window that works in any text field, so if your EHR has a text field, Dragon Medical One can dictate into it.

04 What devices does it run on?

Dragon Medical One runs on Windows, iOS, and Android. Physicians can dictate from a desktop workstation, a tablet at the bedside, or a smartphone between patients. Your voice profile and custom words sync across all your devices automatically.

05 How long does setup take? Is it complicated?

Setup typically takes under five minutes. You download the app, log in, and start dictating. There is no hardware to configure and no voice training session to complete. Most physicians are dictating their first note within minutes of installing it.

06 Is there a free trial?

Yes. Dragon Medical One offers a 7-day free trial with no credit card required. You get full access to the product during the trial - not a limited demo version.

07 What does it cost?

Dragon Medical One is $99 per month per clinician. There are no long-term contracts required. Volume pricing is available for practices with multiple providers.

08 Is it HIPAA compliant?

Yes. Dragon Medical One is fully HIPAA compliant. All audio and data are transmitted and stored using 256-bit encryption. Nuance (a Microsoft company) signs a Business Associate Agreement with covered entities as required under HIPAA.

09 How much time does it actually save?

Most physicians report saving 60 to 90 minutes per day after switching from typing to dictation. The exact savings depend on your current documentation workflow, but for physicians who type their own notes, the difference is significant and immediate.

10 Can I add custom words and phrases for my specialty?

Yes. You can add custom vocabulary - specialty-specific terms, drug names, procedure names, or any phrase you use regularly. You can also create custom voice commands that insert full blocks of text with a single phrase, which is particularly useful for physical exam findings or templated plan sections.

11 What is the difference between Dragon Medical One and the old Dragon NaturallySpeaking Medical?

Dragon NaturallySpeaking (and Dragon Medical Practice Edition) were desktop software installed locally on a single computer. Dragon Medical One is a cloud-based subscription that works across all your devices, requires no local installation of a speech engine, and receives continuous updates automatically. Accuracy is significantly better, and there is no separate voice training session required.
